The 43-year-old mother of one had reported the abusive emails to gardaí. The messages included threats of a sexual nature as well as doctored images.

A 37-year-old man was arrested at an address in Portmarnock on Tuesday and was questioned by gardaí in Raheny.

He was tracked down via his computer’s IP address. It’s understood a computer and other equipment were seized.

The news anchor was interviewed by gardaí after both she and RTÉ management made the initial complaint.

IT experts were also brought in to see what information could be gleaned from the computer files.

The suspect was taken to Raheny Garda Station, where gardaí had the power to hold him for 24 hours, excluding rest breaks, without charge.

As that period of detention was due to end, gardaí confirmed that shortly before 7pm last night the arrested man was released without charge.

A file is now due to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for consideration.
