Rehab chief’s salary tops €240,000

Under-fire disability group Rehab is paying its chief executive Angela Kerins almost a quarter of a million euro a year — but has failed to confirm other high-ranking officials’ salaries.

After weeks of delays in revealing the lavish pay packet, the group finally confirmed Ms Kerins’ €240,000 salary last night.

The senior official also takes home a 6% defined benefit pension, bringing in €14,400 more a year, and is entitled to use a 2010 Q5 Audi company car.

She receives no private health insurance, no directors’ fees for sitting on subsidiary company boards, is only entitled to “out of pocket” expenses and has waived an undisclosed amount of bonuses since 2010, a spokesperson said.

Ms Kerins’s salary is higher than those of Taoiseach Enda Kenny (€185,350) and is €6,000 more than when the Rehab chief executive’s pay packet was previously revealed in 2011.

In a statement last night Rehab said Ms Kerins “encouraged the publication of this information”.

Chairman Brian Kerr said: “We are satisfied this is competitive and fair remuneration for the person leading the Rehab Group.”

A spokesperson said the details were confined to Ms Kerins as this was the only figure asked for by the Taoiseach, and the rest of the executives’ salaries will not be made available until October 2016.

Public accounts committee member and Fianna Fáil TD, Sean Fleming, said the refusal to reveal more salary details until next year is “untenable”, adding “the HSE will not accept that”.

He said: “The minister for public expenditure needs to clarify whether such organisations are subject to the public sector pay cap.”

Approximately 40%, or €50m, of Rehab’s annual budget is paid by taxpayers.
