Edward Hartigan was looking for a battery for his mobile phone.

Judge Seán Ó Donnabháin jailed Hartigan for two years at Cork Circuit Criminal Court yesterday for false imprisonment, assault to commit a robbery, and production of a knife.

Garda John O’Flynn said the women had just left their flat on Wellington Rd when Hartigan accosted them. They managed to run away, gardaí were alerted, and Garda O’Flynn arrested Hartigan a short time later.

The case dated back to August 6, 2004. Sentencing had been put back for Hartigan to deal with the probation service but he then fled to Spain. In December gardaí learned he had returned. He was arrested and held in custody for sentencing.
