The HSE is facing a fresh storm after frontline medics claimed it has ignored life-saving recommendations for emergency departments for two years.

In a letter to health service management and the independent Health Information Quality Authority (Hiqa), the Irish Emergency Medicine Trainees’ Association (IEMTA) said the units are “unequivocally dangerous for patients”.

Its president, Dr Aileen McCabe, wrote that trolley count levels remain too high, overcrowding is damaging patient care, and staff shortages are leaving chronic gaps in the vital emergency department system.
