The strength of existing competition in the market for commercial television services by satellite and cable providers has ruled out plans for the roll-out of digital terrestrial television, according to a major new study.

The report, commissioned by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, also raised concerns about the future viability of the Saorview service.

The BAI has confirmed that it will not proceed with a licensing process forthe introduction of commercial digital terrestrial TV (DTT) because such a service was unlikely to prove commercially viable.
