Two prison officers are recovering after suffering smoke inhalation during a fire at Limerick Prison.

The fire broke out on Thursday night at around 11.30pm at a control room at the jail on Mulgrave St, Limerick City. Three fire tenders from the city’s fire and rescue service, as well as three ambulances, and gardaí, attended the scene. The fire was brought under control in about an hour.

The two prison officers were taken by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick and are believed to be in a stable condition.
