A number of books of condolence are open around the country for people to express their sympathies on the death of Nelson Mandela.

People across the island pay tribute to ‘courageous, dignified’ man

- In Dublin, Lord Mayor Oisín Quinn has made a book available for signing at the Mansion House in Dawson St, by request of South African Ambassador to Ireland Jeremiah Ndou.

It remains open from 10am to 5pm today and tomorrow& and will be moved to the ambassador’s residence at 20a Shrewsbury Rd in Ballsbridge on Monday. It will be open daily from 10am to 3pm until next Friday.

- A book of condolences opened yesterday morning at the offices of Cork City Council, where Lord Mayor Catherine Clancy said there was a steady stream of people signing during the day.

It will be available to the public to sign again from Monday at the civic offices on Anglesea St.

- People can pay tribute to Mr Mandela in a book of condolence being opened today at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. It will be open there until next Saturday, Dec 14. Dean Victor Stacey said it is hoped the cathedral will offer comfort to people mourning the loss of a courageous, dignified man who dedicated his life to equality and reconciliation.

- People in Limerick can sign books of condolence at City Hall or at County Hall in Dooradoyle. Both will remain open during office hours next week, until 5pm next Friday.

- NUI Galway — which gave Mr Mandela an honorary doctorate in law in 2003 — will open a book of condolence in the atrium of its James Hardiman Library, available from 9am to 5pm today; 10am to 5pm tomorrow and Monday from 9am to 8pm.

- An online book of condolence is on the Immigrant Council of Ireland’s Facebook page and will be passed on to the South African Embassy. .
