Will Leahy hosts the More Music Drive programme on RTÉ 2FM each afternoon from the Lyric studios in Limerick.
As a solicitor for Limerick County Council, he spends most mornings in district courts in Limerick, dealing with planning and environmental issues.
Will, 42, said: “It is an interesting mix of careers. There is a performance element on radio and in court. In both, you have to have the ability to talk off the top of your head and know your subject without having to refer to notes and paperwork.
“In court, you are talking to an audience of one, a judge, while on radio you can be talking to hundreds of thousands,” he says. “But your work in court as a solicitor can be more intimidating, in that you have to look the judge in the eye, whereas on radio you don’t see your audience at all.”
Will comes from eight generations of lawyers. He has also been given a major assignment by RTÉ One, when he will host the ringing in of the new year with Daithí Ó Sé.
“I will MC a concert outside Limerick City Hall and Daithí will do the same from Dublin,” says Will. “The Limerick element will also mark the commencement of the Limerick Year of Culture 2014. We expect up to 30,000 to come out to see the street show and fireworks display, and this will be followed by a huge concert which will feature top acts including Dolores O’Riordan and the Irish Chamber Orchestra.”
At weekends, Will spends a lot of time researching for the week ahead.
“I must be the only solicitor in Limerick who doesn’t play golf,” he says. “I also ensure I have some family time with my wife, Rachel and our daughter, Jessica, who is two.”
Prior to getting his daily slot on 2FM, Will hosted The Saturday Show, which went out from noon to 3pm and was the second most-listened to show on the station next to the late Gerry Ryan.
Will’s daily show is currently the most listened-to programme at that time of the day among listeners aged under 35.
