The removal of two Roma children from their homes by gardaí on the basis of claims they did not look like their parents was not about any group being singled out, the Government said.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny, said the cases in Dublin and the Midlands “should not be seen to be about any group or any minority” but that “this is about children”.

Responding to the cases that have caused widespread concern about the treatment of individuals based on their race, Mr Kenny said: “This is a case of the safety and centrality of children as distinct from any categorisation of a sector or a minority grouping.”
