Environmental scientists have been unable to pinpoint the source of a nauseating smell plaguing a top tourist town in West Cork.

The business community and residents in Clonakilty are demanding answers, a meeting of Cork County Council’s western committee division was told yesterday.

Contributory factors to the “rotten egg” smell, however, are an allegedly inadequate council-run waste water treatment plant along with farm discharges into Clonakilty Bay which has large areas of tidal mudflats.
