Burton defends cuts to payments to young on dole

Cuts to dole payments of one third for newly unemployed young people have been defended by Social Protection Minister Joan Burton.

The reductions in welfare payments for new claimants will affect an expected 14,000 people under the age of 26 in January.

The Government last night faced accusations that it was encouraging emigration by cutting dole payments for young people by as much as 30%.
