A new Islamic cultural centre in Cork City which was the focus of a planning controversy last month is throwing open its doors to the public this weekend.

Islamic centre to host public open day

The centre, on Shandon St, will be officially opened on Saturday by Lord Mayor Cllr Catherine Clancy.

The official opening will be followed by an open day from 11am to 4pm to allow local residents and interested people to learn more about the centre ands its work.

Dr Fergal Radwan, who developed the centre, said: “There is a growing Islamist population in Cork but also in this immediate area and our centre will offer them a space to address their needs.

“The open day is important for us as we would like the local community to come and visit with us so we can answer any of their questions. There have been some misconceptions recently so this will be a chance to address those.

“It is important for everyone to understand that whether one is at work, at home or in this centre, and it is prayer time, one has to pray. Each of the hospitals in the city has a prayer room as has UCC and others so why would we not allow for prayer in our centre?”

The day will showcase food, music, and heritage.
