An island community is to take control of a former British-built gun battery as a potential tourism attraction.

The Bere Island Project Group has signed a licensed agreement with the Department of Defence to preserve the Lonehart Battery, part of the old Berehaven Fort created by the British naval fleet.

Locals, in due course, plan to have accompanied tourist visits to the planned coastal defence artillery site which, for health and safety reasons, will not be opened to the public.
