The number of HSE staff earning an annual salary in excess of €100,000 has increased this year, despite the constraints on public service pay levels.

Health Minister James Reilly has admitted that the number of HSE executives earning a six-figure salary has risen from 121 in 2012 to 129 by last May.

Dr Reilly justified the increase in the number of senior HSE staff on high pay by claiming it was essential that the health service was led by people with the requisite skills and expertise to ensure the safe and effective provision of services to the public during a period of major change.
