President Michael D Higgins has insisted that being subjected to “personal abuse” will not stop him speaking out on important issues.

He hit back after he was accused of using a DCU lecture to express bias towards economists and academics from the left.

It is the first time Mr Higgins has directly responded to claims he has pushed the boundaries of his office since being elected in Oct 2011.
