Man involved in street fight jailed for four months

A man who got involved in a street fight outside a house party in Ballyvolane, Cork City, in the early hours of the morning was yesterday sentenced to four months in jail.

Garda Eric Stafford encountered Gary Dennehy outside the house at Pynes Valley, Ballyvolane, Cork, at 2am on Jun 16, where he was fighting with another man.

Grda Stafford directed Dennehy, aged 22, of 53 Woodlawn, Tramore Rd, Cork, to leave the scene but when gardaí returned moments later they found Dennehy fighting another man.

Dennehy was arrested and charged with threatening behaviour and failing to leave the scene when directed.

Judge Olann Kelleher noted Dennehy had been given numerous opportunities to avoid jail in the past.

“This man has got four community service orders and three or four suspended jail sentences,” said Mr Justice Kelleher. “Everyone has helped him but he has decided to keep going and interfering with gardaí. He had numerous chances.”

Defence solicitor, Frank Buttimer, said: “The background to this incident is that he was at the party with his girlfriend, there was some fight and he got involved in it. He was not involved in it at the start but he persisted in his involvement.”

Dennehy had 21 previous convictions, Inspector John Deasy said.
