A banking inquiry that can be carried out quickly by between 10 and 20 TDs and senators, and investigate some months before and after the bank guarantee is expected to be in place early next year.

After months of deliberations the Cabinet has reached consensus that the probe should be conducted by a select group from the Oireachtas finance committee — chaired by Labour’s Ciaran Lynch.

The Cork South Central TD said he will be convening a meeting of its members next week to discuss its plans. They will then submit a proposal to the committee on privilege and procedures — which has a government majority and which has the final say on who will carry out the hearings.
