Self-harm figures surge at St Patrick’s

Self-harm incidents more than doubled in St Patrick’s Institution for young offenders last year.

The report of the prison’s visiting committee said there were also 73 injuries from assaults in 2012 — 72 at the hands of other inmates.

The 2012 report said that a semi-basement area, known as The Unit, was an “oppressive place with little daylight”.
