Hair-raising Holly shows she’s up for the match

It’s the kind of head-start the Rebel Army’s been looking for as they seek a Clare scalp in Sunday’s All-Ireland hurling showdown.

Hair-raising Holly shows she’s up for the match

If proof was needed that Cork fans are up for the match, one die-hard rebelette has shown her true colours by creating an upstyle to dye for.

And it’s even impressed hurling boss Jimmy Barry Murphy, who was happy to sign a photograph of it at one of the squad’s final training sessions.

Holly Hill, 19, a junior stylist in Salon 33 in Ballyvolane on the northside of Cork city, spent two hours creating the masterpiece.

“My boss Michael asked me if I would I like to do something ahead of the match,” Holly said.

“I love an old challenge, and I love being creative so I spent about a week getting ideas and preparing it.

“I had two practice runs then I came in to the salon on my day off on Wednesday and it took about two hours to do.”

She roped in her friend, Rachel Walsh, to model the hurling-inspired curling.

Holly, from Glen Heights Park, dyed the top of Rachel’s hair green, to represent the Croke Park turf. She crafted two 1ft-high hurleys from hair extensions and clipped them in place. She wrapped two braided strips of dyed black hair around each hurl’s base to represent splice, and stuck a sliotar, made from hair, between the two.

Holly, dad Desmond, and younger brother Luke are among thousands of Cork fans heading to Croke Park on Sunday. They haven’t yet secured tickets but remain hopeful.

And how will Holly be wearing her hair on Sunday? “I don’t know yet. But I’m planning something special. I’ll be going all out for it.”

And last night, Cork Business Association revealed the winner of its best-dressed rebel display shop window competition.

Hennessy Hair and Beauty Store on Pembroke St took the honour, with tributes paid to manager John Forth and his staff Linda, Janet, Kerry, and Jade for their colourful efforts in getting behind the Cork hurlers.
