Pull up a seat and tuck in to a free lunch in West Cork

Who says there’s no such thing as a free lunch? Well, pull up a seat at this region’s food festival and tuck in — for nothing!

Pull up a seat and tuck in to a free lunch in West Cork

Participating restaurants in Skibbereen, Baltimore, Glandore, Union Hall, Leap and Castletownshend are serving up free lunches showcasing a specific regional product, between now and Sept 17, to help celebrate the 10th annual Taste of West Cork Food Festival.

Foodies, with proof of travel to, or accommodation in the area, can pick up a limited number of vouchers for their free lunch, up to a maximum value of €10, from the festival’s headquarters in Skibbereen.

This year’s event, which kicks off this weekend, will feature food markets, cookery demonstrations and competitions, special dinners, brunches and banquets, food-tastings, movies, talks, walks, music, exhibitions, and several children’s events.

Highlights will include a Growing Awareness project to help and encourage people grow their own food.

A grower’s seminar this Saturday has a range of guest speakers including Guy Watson of Riverford Farm in England, who produces over 47,000 crates of fresh organic vegetables every week.

The Belling Forum — a think-tank which plans to prepare a five-year action plan to help the West Cork region position itself as a world leading food region — takes place on Saturday.

And the Belling West Cork Artisan Food Awards will also be presented to honour local food producers for their contribution to the region, and to encourage others to develop new products.

The awards are the brainchild of Sean O’Driscoll, chief executive and chairman of Glen Dimplex/Belling.

Sean is a native of West Cork and is a farmer’s son.

Local food markets will run in the various towns and villages throughout the weekend.

“West Cork is the natural home for a festival celebrating artisan foods and showcasing a delicious array of foodstuffs prepared with great taste, health, and best practice in mind,” said festival chairwoman Helen Collins.

“We look forward to welcoming visitors from near and far.”
