Organisers announced details yesterday of this and almost 150 other free events which will take place at some 80 venues across the city on Friday, Sept 20 for the fourth annual Culture Night.

As well as art exhibitions, poetry readings, orchestra performances and food markets, organisers have added several new events, and a series of family-focused attractions, with story-telling, print making and hip hop class dancing planned.

UCC’s School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, will open its door to show off its ancient fossils, carnivorous plants, and some of the original specimens collected during Darwin’s HMS Beagle voyage.

The Kino will play host to a diverse selection of local bands.

Blackrock Village will host a fete, complete with a traditional market and food fair, with music from the Cork Samba Band and the Dust Busters. The Cork Astronomy Club will be on site and Meitheal Mara and the Cork Boat Club will have boats on show.

The Cork County Cricket Club will host a RíRá night celebrating the Irish language, songs and dance.

And, in a first for Culture Night, a ‘Tweet for the Treasure’ event is planned.

Clues will be tweeted on the social network throughout the evening to encourage people to scour the city for its hidden gems.

The River Lee Hotel has offered a weekend for two at the Westbury Hotel in Dublin as the top prize for the winner.

“Cork Culture Night has been being completely embraced by the people of Cork with over 43,000 visitors to the venues in 2012,” Lord Mayor Catherine Clancy said.

“Cork people have a long tradition of supporting arts and culture and with over 150 free events in over 80 venues they won’t be disappointed with what’s on offer.”

Bus Eireann will provide a “culture bus” to ferry people free of charge between venues.
