Man arrested over assault on garda

The suspect, who was arrested in Ferbane, Co Offaly, yesterday morning, is being detained for questioning at Birr Garda Station.
He is being quizzed in relation to the attack on a garda who was set upon while investigating a suspicious vehicle in Ferbane on Saturday, Aug 24.
The Cloghan-based garda was on a routine patrol when he spotted the suspicious silver 4 X 4 vehicle at a filling station on the Athlone Road in Ferbane at 5.15am.
His suspicions were further aroused upon speaking with the vehicle’s lone male occupant.
A subsequent search uncovered a large sum of money and a quantity of drugs.
As the garda secured the vehicle, he was knocked to the ground, set upon, and repeatedly struck. The assailant fled on foot when the officer managed to call for help.
The garda was taken to hospital, where he was treated for his injuries, including a wound to his earlobe, which needed six stitches. He returned to work last Saturday.
Investigating gardaí seized the vehicle, cash, and drugs following the incident.
The suspect can be held for up to 24 hours.
