The achievements of The Liberator are to be recalled in Caherciveen and Derrynane next Friday and Saturday.

Chairwoman of the school, Mary O’Connor of Derrynane, said the event was a “kind of revival” as it had been active during the 1980s and 90s.

The school will be based in Caherciveen, where O’Connell was born, and in Derrynane, where he lived.

The academic director of the programme will be Caherciveen-born Maurice Bric of the history department, University College Dublin.

There will be a wide range of speakers, including John A Murphy, Margaret MacCurtain, Noel Whelan, Joe Little, and Barry Andrews from Goal.

Gearoid O Tuathaigh of NUI Galway will address the subject ‘O’Connell the Reformer’, while former justice minister Michael McDowell will talk about how reform is reviewed in the Ireland of today.
