A local authority has defended its decision to send frontline staff on self-defence courses, despite criticism of the cost and concerns it was sending out the wrong message.

Cork City Council said sending key staff on the daylong ‘Responding to Threats and Violence’ course was part of its health and safety response to protect staff.

“It is the intention of Cork City Council to continue to provide appropriate safety, health, and welfare training for staff in response to ongoing risk assessments,” it said.
