The call comes on the back of moves in Britain following concerns at the impact of traumatic cross-examination in trials, which, in one case, resulted in the suicide of one of the victims.

The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre said there needed to be “rules of engagement” in the courts here, especially to protect vulnerable witnesses.
