Turfcutters are expected to defy a controversial EU and Government ban by cutting turf in a bog in North Kerry on Sunday, Aug 25.

Moanveanlagh bog, which is outside Listowel, is one of 53 raised bogs on which turfcutting is prohibited under an EU directive.

Earlier this year people who have been using the bog for generations indicated they would again harvest turf there, despite pleas from Arts and Heritage Minister Jimmy Deenihan, a FG TD for Kerry North/West Limerick, not to do so.
