A 47-year-old farmer became the 100th person to die on Irish roads this year when he lost control of his car and hit a ditch a short distance from his home.

John O’Connor, a widower, had been returning to his home in North Cork when the accident occurred shortly after 9pm last Monday.

The farmer, who lived at Curragh, Dromina, was driving his grey Skoda Octavia when the vehicle veered off the road and hit a ditch and tree.
