‘Creative thinking’ needed on hospital

The need for “creative thinking” about the future use of a Victorian-era hospital complex overlooking Killarney, Co Kerry, has been highlighted.

When the imminent closure of St Finan’s Psychiatric Hospital became apparent during the Celtic Tiger, it was being eyed for conversion into a money-spinning tourism, leisure or business development.

But times have changed and the complex — which once accommodated more than 1,000 patients — no longer has the same commercial value.
