When the imminent closure of St Finan’s Psychiatric Hospital became apparent during the Celtic Tiger, it was being eyed for conversion into a money-spinning tourism, leisure or business development.

But times have changed and the complex — which once accommodated more than 1,000 patients — no longer has the same commercial value.
