The Government estimates it will achieve annual savings of €55m following the closure of a loophole which allowed motorists to evade motor tax.

New procedures came into effect yesterday governing the ability of car owners to declare their vehicle “off the road” for motor tax purposes.

The measures are designed to close the controversial loophole which previously allowed motorists to make such declarations retrospectively at their local Garda station.
