Three men jailed for assaulting women

Two women were viciously assaulted by three young Cork men who chanted at them, “fucking gypsies, fucking Muslims, fucking terrorists” and then ran away laughing, leaving one with a broken eye socket.

Three men jailed for assaulting women

Young Dutch woman Ester Everston, who had her eye socket fractured, said: “How could these guys be so mean? They hit and kicked girls, hitting and kicking my friend on the ground, three against one. I still cannot believe what happened.”

Her friend Kathrin Rashid, whose parents are German and Palestinian, said she could still hear the sound of Ms Everston’s bone being broken.

All three males, Anthony O’Sullivan, Jamie O’Flynn and Jamie Kelly, are aged around 19.

Judge Seán Ó Donnabháin said of Ms Rashid’s victim impact report. “Believe it or not, she has a concern for these three young thugs whether they would learn anything in jail. She is worried about the effect of a conviction of their future and asks could I send them to charity work or somewhere that would teach them about freedom?”

Sergeant David O’Callaghan said that the violent incident occurred on St Patrick Street, Cork, at 2am on Jul 30 last year.

“They were walking on Patrick St when they observed three males hassling a female on her own. Kathrin Rashid shouted at them to leave her alone.

“They turned on her and Anthony O’Sullivan pushed her.

“Jamie O’Flynn caught her by the arm and head. He pulled the traditional head scarf from her head.

“Jamie Kelly then joined in and hit her. Jamie Kelly then punched Ester Everston into the face.”

Kelly and O’Flynn continued to attack Ms Rashid. “As she was knocked backwards, Anthony O’Sullivan punched her in the side of the head knocking her against shutters.

“Kathrin Rashid got away from her attackers and as she went to get back her head scarf all three shouted, ‘you fucking gypsies, fucking Muslims, fucking terrorists’.

“Jamie O’Flynn took four steps back to Kathrin Rashid and kicked her back on to the ground…

“It was captured on camera overhead… The three men ran down Princes St on to Oliver Plunkett St. They can be seen laughing and joking.”

All three pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to Ms Rashid. Kelly pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to Ms Everston.

Kelly, of 28 Glencurrig Court, South Douglas Road, was sentenced to two years, with the last six months suspended.

O’Flynn, of 25 Grange Park, Douglas, was sentenced to two years with nine months suspended.

Judge Ó Donnabháin remanded O’Sullivan, of 3 The Walk, Herons Wood, Carrigaline, in custody for sentencing on Jul 30.
