Having a tough childhood can affect your long-term health and even cause chronic illness in later life, according to research.

Analysing data from two existing studies — the Growing Up in Ireland Study (GUI) and the National Longitudinal Study of Ageing (TILDA) — the ESRI has concluded that money invested in childhood will have positive effects in the long run.

A conference in Dublin today will discuss the findings.
