Shane Brolly was a backseat passenger in a car which struck another vehicle in the early hours of yesterday morning.

His sister Emma broke her arm in the tragedy which happened on Glenfin Rd, just outside Ballybofey in Donegal.

Less than a year ago, Shane watched as his best friend Shane Patton, 19, was buried after he was killed in a car crash in Drumkeen, Co Donegal, on Jul 13.

The pair attended St Columba’s College in Stranorlar together. A friend said they had been drawn together by their love of cars. “The lads were always talking about cars and were in and out of cars all the time.

“It’s tragic but very poignant that both have died this way.”

Shane Brolly had spent the last days of his life doing what he loved — watching the Donegal Rally.

Traffic Corps Inspector Michael Harrison appealed for witnesses. “This is a very tragic and very sad incident. We simply do not know what happened at this stage and we are awaiting the results of the full examination,” he said.

Of the other people involved in the collision, their injuries are non-life-threatening. All five had been taken to Letterkenny General Hospital where Mr Brolly was later pronounced dead.
