Man pleads guilty to rape of woman
Sylvester Torrens, aged 31, with an address at Spring Lane, Blackpool, Cork, was arraigned yesterday at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Cork.
Torrens was arraigned on three counts and he pleaded guilty to all of them.
The first charge was one of raping the woman by penetrating her mouth with his penis. The second was of sexually assaulting the same victim. The third count was one of assault causing harm to the woman.
Marjorie Farrelly, prosecuting, said the injured party did not want to be identified in coverage of the case but she had no difficulty with Torrens being identified.
Sentencing was adjourned until Jun 28 to allow time for the preparation of a probation report and a medical report on Torrens. A victim impact report will also be presented to the court at the time of sentencing.
James O’Mahony, defending, said the defendant was applying to be allowed out on continuing bail.
Ms Farrelly said the DPP was not in favour of that application.
Mr Justice Paul Carney said that in the absence of agreement from the DPP he would not release Torrens on bail until the sentencing date.
Mr Justice Carney also said there would be objections among the community to someone convicted of rape being allowed to wander free after conviction.
