A West Cork town fighting to save its local council from abolition under sweeping local government reforms has urged other towns in a similar position to unite.

The people of Clonakilty issued the rallying call as it announced plans to hold a referendum, later this year, on the Government’s plans to scrap its town council, along with dozens of others around the country.

Last week, the Boundary Commission published plans to slash councillor numbers, redraw electoral boundaries, abolish 82 town councils, and incorporate them into a reconfigured county council structure.
