Compulsory motorcycle NCT tests plan rejected by EU and Ireland

Plans for the introduction of mandatory roadworthiness tests for all motorcycles and mopeds have been scrapped both in Ireland and at EU level.

The Road Safety Authority said there was no statistical evidence to suggest there was a serious problem with the lack of roadworthiness of motorcycles to make NCT tests for such vehicles compulsory.

It follows the rejection by the European Parliament’s transport and tourism committee last week of proposals to introduce EU minimum standards for motorcycles as well as trailers.
