More than 200 inmates at Cork prison are still forced to slop out their cells — the highest in any jail.

The numbers of prisoners slopping out — the emptying of buckets of human waste by prisoners when their cells are unlocked in the morning time — has fallen by 36% in the past year to 535.

According to Alan Shatter, the justice minister, the number will fall 32% to 360 by September when the D Division in Mountjoy closes for refurbishment.
