Polo reward for Volkswagen vet, 100

He’s had a ball in two Golf GTis and successfully operated with 13 consecutive Beetles, so a car dealership decided to reward a Tipperary veterinarian for his loyalty by giving him a new car for his 100th birthday.

Jack Powell has had 41 Volkswagens since he bought his first Beetle in 1953, so when the Thurles native reached his century on May 29, the local dealership decided to give him his second Polo.

“My first Volkswagen was a Beetle and it had a split window and six-volt lighting and it suited my job — and I stuck with them,” he said.

“I had 13 consecutive Beetles, 11 Variants, two Golf GTis, four Jettas, four Golfs and two Polos among others.”

His favourite was his first Golf GTi.

“It often got me in trouble, because the trouble with the GTi was it couldn’t go slow.

“They were an amazing car.”
