Mystery surrounds the circumstances of a crash on a motorway early yesterday morning, when an elderly motorist travelling alone was killed.

The victim of the collision, on the M8 south of Cahir in Co Tipperary, was Martin Heffernan from the village of Lattin, outside Tipperary town.

He was in his early 80s, a single man and well-known in farming circles as well as in the political community as he was a long-standing Fine Gael activist.
