The specialist centre to help tackle suicide and self harm, Pieta House, experienced a large increase in requests for support last year particularly among people in their 30s.

In 2012, 2,736 people contacted the service looking for support after they tried to deal with thoughts of harming themselves.

This represented an increase of 42% for its five centres in Limerick and Dublin.
