A charity that sparked a mass public response after reporting that a Spanish couple had been robbed of their belongings has said it got the story wrong and has apologised for any confusion.

As more details emerged over the weekend about the plight of the couple, Penny Dinners has admitted its reports the heavily pregnant woman and her husband were victims of a robbery were not true. The charity also insists it is not the victim of a scam.

Penny Dinners, which made a public appeal after mistakenly claiming the couple had been robbed while staying at a hostel, has vowed to continue helping the couple.
