Property Tax bill for entire barracks

A soldier in Dundalk has been sent a Property Tax bill for an entire army barracks.

The bill was for “Cathal Brugha Barracks” in Dublin and it listed the serving member of the Defence Forces as the “owner or person liable”, for the tax.

The Department of Defence confirmed “the barracks is owned by this Department,” while the Defence Forces Press Office was directing all queries to the Revenue Commissioners who issued the estimate.

It’s understood the soldier, who was once based at the Dublin camp, is now stationed in Aiken Barracks in Dundalk.

A photograph of the bill — for €427 — was put onto a private social media page on Tuesday evening but has since gone viral.

It is addressed to him at Cathal Brugha Barracks and says Revenue records show he is the owner or person liable for “local property tax on the residential property”.

The Revenue Commissioners have admitted that some letters have been sent in error and that the bill is only an estimate.

In a statement Revenue said, “It is stated in the Local Property Tax letter that, if you are not the owner of the property, you should contact Revenue on 1890 200 255 so that we can correct our records.”

“It is most important that you don’t ignore the letter because in the absence of any correction, Revenue will proceed on the basis that you are liable to pay LPT in respect of the property.”

Cathal Brugha Barracks was built between 1810 and 1815 and today is the home of the 2nd Eastern Brigade, the 2nd Infantry Battalion and numerous brigade combat, combat support and combat service support units.
