It’s been a journey that has taken 20 years of hard graft, so it was only fitting for Ireland’s women’s rugby team to claim the Six Nations Grand Slam in Milan yesterday with a display based on hard work.

In 1993, the women had to pay for their own jerseys, flights, and accommodation for their debut match against Scotland. Yesterday, they provided the only shining light of an otherwise miserable Six Nations for Irish rugby.

“I want to congratulate our women’s rugby team on winning the grand slam in Milan today,” read a congratulatory statement from President Michael D Higgins.
