Rabbitte to review laws on use of social media

The law will be examined for deficiencies in dealing with the use of social media, Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte said yesterday.

He said there might be a gap in the legislation in dealing with the abuse of social media and cyberbullying and his department was now considering ways to address the issue.

Mr Rabbitte, addressing an Oireachtas meeting dealing with social media and governance, said he had “difficulties” with the policies of some social networking companies in dealing with offensive material posted on their websites.
