Limerick tops league table for cars vandalised
A poll shows more people in Limerick have had their vehicles targeted by vandals in the past two years than in any other county in the country.
In close second, behind Limerick, comes Co Dublin.
The AA Motor Insurance poll of 18,000 people revealed that 9% of people living in Limerick walked up to their car in the past two years to find it deliberately damaged. In Co Dublin, that figure stood at 7% of people questioned while in Cork, it stood at 5%, Kerry, 6%, and Clare, 4%.
However while windows might be broken, paintwork keyed or tyres slashed in Limerick, more cars are broken into in Dublin than anywhere else in the country.
The research showed how 4% of people in the capital suffered a car break-in while that figure nationally stood at 3%. Car stealing is still quite rare with only 1% of people having their car stolen.
During the poll, conducted last month, 6% of respondents overall around the country said their car had been targeted by vandals at some point during the last two years.
Director of consumer affairs at AA Ireland, Conor Faughnan, said it is news to see vehicle theft is down, particularly against the backdrop of a rise in burglaries.
“Typically burglaries and car theft go hand in hand as it’s near impossible to break into modern cars without the immobiliser key. Your car is likely to be one of the most expensive items you own so try to think of the keys like other high-value content in your home. Don’t leave them somewhere obvious or easy to grab,” he said.
