Actress Victoria Smurfit has recalled how she came within inches of death when a gunman opened fire on a taxi she was travelling in while holidaying in South Africa.

In the wake of the Oscar Pistorius case the 38-year-old, who has just landed a leading role in a new US drama series Dracula, took to Twitter yesterday to speak about the day when a bullet whizzed past her face in a cab in Cape Town.

After the incident her family were told that a South Africa gang has declared a Kill A Tourist day on New Year’s Eve 2009 when the actress and her husband Doug Baxter along with her mum, her brother Dermot and his wife Charlie were travelling in a taxi.
