It was rumoured that Finance Minister Michael Noonan was planning to make a speech that night at 9pm. But then shortly before 6pm, RTÉ and Reuters reported the proposal to liquidate Anglo Irish Bank. It was ‘game on’, or so we thought...

Within half an hour, Noonan cancelled his speech to await the deliberations in Frankfurt. But by 9pm, the Government confirmed it needed to put Anglo’s liquidation on a legal basis and opted for an emergency session of parliament...
