An extension of the deep water container terminal in Ringaskiddy is “vital” for the southern region’s future economic wellbeing.

The importance of an upgrade was highlighted by senior Port of Cork official Captain Pat Farnan, who steps down today after 33 years of service.

The port was refused planning permission by An Bord Pleanála in 2011 to build a multi-million euro extension to the deep water quay, because of the inadequate road network out of Ringaskiddy and over-capacity at the Jack Lynch Tunnel.
