More than 20,000 sign book of condolences
Tomorrow the town of Dundalk and much of the Cooley Peninsula, where he lived, is expected to come to a standstill for his State funeral.
Despite heavy rain and wind, more than 2,000 people queued to sign the book at the Garda stationin Dundalk yesterday or at St Pat’s GFC in Lordship.
The Dundalk GRA (Garda Representative Association) spokesperson in Dundalk, Garda Robbie Peelo said: “This is a decent town, and whether it is at checkpoints or on the street or wherever they meet them, the public is sympathising with every garda they meet.
“They are wishing us well and there is a mixture of tears and anger in their eye as they do it.”
The president of Dundalk Chamber of Commerce, Paddy Malone, said by signing the various books of condolence the people of north Louth have shown that criminal activity has no place in society.
It is believed all the business in the town centre and along the route the cortege will close for the duration of the funeral.
After 12.30pm Requiem Mass at St Joseph’s Redemptorist Church the cortege will drive past the Garda station and then through the town centre.
