The Carlow actress beat competition from a host of young starlets to land the leading role in the sci-fi flick The Host, which is already causing a huge buzz around Hollywood.
With The Host anticipated to generate the same hysteria as the Twilight saga, the Oscar-nominated actress is expected to be catapulted to the level of fame enjoyed by Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.
The Host will see Ronan play a parasitic alien soul called Wanda who is injected into the body of human Melanie Stryder.
The Atonement star said playing two different roles in the same body was her ultimate film role. “I was really excited about the idea of actually getting to play two characters in the one film,” she said. “It’s the actor’s dream, really, to do that.”
Meyer has the distinction of being the author who managed to topple the Harry Potter series off the bestseller list with her vampires-in-high-school blockbusters.
In a behind-the-scenes trailer released by Open Road films, the writer said Ronan was the perfect choice for her heroine. “We really needed an actress who could do these two characters and sell them both. She is really amazing. You watch her and think: ‘Wow she can do anything’.”
Meanwhile, filming started last week on Ronan’s latest film, The Grand Budapest Hotel, on location in Berlin.
The movie, directed by Wes Anderson, features an all-star ensemble cast including Ralph Fiennes, Jude Law, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Jeff Goldblum, Willem Dafoe, Tilda Swinton, and Owen Wilson.
