A 12-year-old girl remained in a critical condition last night after being hit by a car outside her home in a suburb of Cork City.

Chelsea Wyse underwent surgery at Cork University Hospital after she sustained injuries in the accident, which occurred just after 4pm yesterday.

The primary school pupil was taken by ambulance to the hospital where family members last night kept a bedside vigil.

The accident occurred on Harbour View Rd, in Knocknaheeny. Chelsea’s family are well known in the area and have lived there for a considerable time.

Supt Con Cadogan, who is leading the investigation, said gardaĂ­ were appealing for witnesses.

“We spoke to four or five drivers at the scene but there were others we didn’t speak to and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed the accident to contact us at Gurranabraher Garda Station [021 439 5540]” he said.

In a separate incident yesterday, paramedics rushed to the scene of a crash in Cork City just after 3pm. Five people were transferred to CUH following a crash involving two cars on Shandon St. The persons involved were not seriously injured in the incident.
